Bordering Lake Michigan, Illinois is known for its cold winters with blizzards and lake-effect snow, and also for hot summers with record heat waves (those in 1936 and 1995 were two of the worst in our country's history). Residents should be prepared for both extremes. Rainfall is greater in the south of the state, while snowfall is greater in the north. Thunderstorms and flooding are common, as well as tornadoes (an average of 35 a year).
