Statistically, Kansas is one of the sunniest states. It's also one of the windiest (with Dodge City dubbed the windiest city in the country). The western part of the state is very dry, whereas the east is wet and prone to heavy rains and flooding. In spring and summer, thunderstorms and tornadoes (an average of 50 a year) sweep across the state. Winter is cold in the north, with occasional blizzards, but mild in the south.
