The Peach Tree state enjoys a pleasant southern climate for most of the year, but the heat and humidity can be extreme during summer. Thunderstorms are common and tornadoes are a frequent threat. Hurricanes are usually downgraded to tropical storms by the time they reach Georgia, but residents should prepare for both. In winter, the northeast gets moderate snowfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains and freezing rain and ice storms elsewhere. Heavy rainfall throughout the state can lead of occasional flooding.
